The newly appointed Asantehemaa, Nana Ama Konadu, has died. Sources close to the Manhyia palace says the 83-year old sister of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II died few weeks after been announced as the Queen.
According to sources, Nana Ama Konadu was ill when she was appointed. “Did you see her at the funeral? At the thanksgiving service? We lost her.” – the source said.
Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II appointed Nana Ama Konadu, as the new Asantehemaa after the death of Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II, the Asante monarch’s mother who passed away at the age of 111 after reigning for 39 years.
An official announcement is expected from the Manyhia Palace about the demise of the Queen. These announcements usually take months “but this particular situation may take years due to several reasons” – the source said.
According to reliable information available to us, Nana Ama Konadu is the only person left in the Asantehene’s family who could be the Asantehemaa. However, her death takes the throne of the Asante Kingdom from the ruling King to a new family.
Major disputes are expected to hit the palace and this may prolong the announcement of the demise of the queen.
Nana Ama Konadu was the 14th queen of the Asante kingdom.
